EASS'10
  Thursday, 26 August 2010  -  Sunday, 12 September 2010

  10:00am  -  4:00pm

Watson Arts Centre, Aspinall Street, Watson ACT 2602

Opening times: Thursday to Sunday 10am-4pm

EASS’10 features the work of five 2009 graduates from the Australian National University School of Art ceramics workshop. Jane Barr, Lucas Boswell, Anna Chicos, Brenda Danbrook and Jodi Dawson were recipients of an exhibition award presented by Canberra Potters’ Society through the ANU’s Emerging Artist Support Scheme (EASS).
Through a shared exhibition award, Canberra Potters’ Society aims to give encouragement and support to ceramics graduates by providing a focus during that important first year after art school. For viewers, it’s a great opportunity to see how a graduate’s work might have developed, whether their graduation focus has been extended, refined or solidified, or whether they have branched out with new inspiration.

For Jane Barr, the interaction of her personal story with particular landscapes informs her current work. Journey and reflection go hand in hand with landscape and story. Using several printing-on-clay techniques she gives expression to the complex interaction of these elements on surface and form.

WOW what a great day the Winter warmer market was!

The weather was our friend (finally) with a gorgeous day and lots of sunshine, perfect for shopping, eating and lounging on the lawns watching the crowds.

A big Thank you to everyone who donated to the hard working parking helpers, you helped raise $1725.25 for 65 Roses day a fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis. Well done! They will be on hand again next market to make sure that the parking is again trouble free. Thanks also to EPIC for allowing us to use their overflow parking area.

Shop Handmade has been buzzing since the market, it seems everyone visited the shop and the market last weekend, which is a very good idea as only 40% of designers are at the market AND the shop. So there is always something new to see! (like these below)

Many of the artworks in this year’s exhibition are inspired by poetry and music and expressed in a variety of arts media such as paintings, sculptures, 3D, photography, new media arts, printmaking and glassworks.

In October last year, Marsden Arts Group won the 2009 Chief Minister’s Inclusion Awards for the Arts, an award given to groups or people who encourage artists with disabilities. Some of the artists in the Marsden Arts Group have disabilities but they are artists first and just happen to have disabilities.

From a single club in Sydney with 10 members, the club upon its golden anniversary now boasts more than 20,000 members and close to 400 clubs nationwide. The Gungahlin Day VIEW Club was opened in 2000.

At a time when women were excluded from service clubs and discouraged from voicing opinions, VIEW seized on Australian women’s growing inclination to rise up against the inequality of previous decades and raise their voices on issues of concern to their families and communities.

At the Convention, to be held at the National Convention Centre in Canberra, delegates will cast their votes on three resolutions drawn from debate at club level nationally, determining whether they will progress as focal points on the national VIEW agenda for 2011. They relate to more equitable representation of women in leadership positions; reduction of alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour; and the implementation of uniform proactive education programs to curb offensive behaviour and cyber bullying.

For more information about Gungahlin Day VIEW Club and The Smith Family, call 1800 805 366 or visit www.thesmithfamily.com.au/view.

FIRST SNAKES OF SPRING SPOTTED
‘Living with Snakes’ talks starting this weekend

The Canberra Reptile Sanctuary (Inc) (CRSI) would like all media outlets to announce to the public, the first reports of brown snakes being spotted on the move have come in. As we move into the progressively warmer weather all reptiles will start travelling around more as we come into their breeding period; thus keep an eye out for animals crossing roads but more pertinently, keep an eye out in the backyard.

Brown snakes have now been spotted, and within the next few weeks many other sightings will take place. The ACT has 7 snake species all of which are venomous. There are a few easy steps to follow that can reduce the risk of coming into contact with snakes and reduce the risk of snake bite.

The CRSI will be running a talk every Saturday starting the 18th of September, open to the public, titled ‘Living with Snakes’. This talk will explain how we can live with these animals while lowering the risk of contact with them, and reducing the risk of snake bite.

If the media would like to explore a 5 minute version of this we are happy to talk about this further or provide a written column if necessary.

For more information on this topic or for assistance on all things reptilian, contact the CRSI on the above contact details.

Organiser Contact: Daniel Cummins (M: 0413 919 777
E: daniel@cumminsracing.com.au)
Local motorsport enthusiast, Daniel Cummins, is organising a motor racing event to raise awareness
and support for HeartKids. This is being done in memory of his younger brother, William John
Cummins, who sadly passed away at the age of 12 as a result of him having a congenital heart
condition.
This year¡¦s event will build on the success of last years inaugural event, which saw many excited
young passengers taken for a parade lap, had a full grid of competitors and large numbers of
spectators, raised almost four thousand dollars in donations and boosted awareness of HeartKids in
the Canberra region.
HeartKids is Australia¡¦s sole charity focussed on Childhood Heart Disease. Childhood Heart Disease
is the most common birth abnormality and is still the greatest killer of children under the age of 5 in
Australia, claiming more lives than all other childhood diseases combined ¡V twice that of childhood
cancers.

In this inaugural event, there will be a 5 or 10km run/walk. Starting in Commonwealth Park. There will be activities at the end of the run to entertain the whole family. With celebrities like former Olympians Duncan Armstrong and Tracey Wickham, Iron man Guy Leach, Comedy company's Mark Mitchell (con the fruiter) and Iva Davies (Icehouse), just to mention a few. The Lions society will be putting on a bbq and there will be face painting for the kids plus lots more.
