Peppa Pig’s Diva Demands
For a children’s cartoon character Peppa Pig has a set of demands that rival the biggest pop divas.
This week the creators of Peppa Pig offered interviews to Australian media to promote an upcoming “special” 15 minute episode of the hit British TV show.
Questions had to be pre-approved by the creators and were only allowed via email.
Then, in a move straight from the Kardashian playbook, certain topics were black-listed.
Among the list of topics that Peppa’s creators refused to talk about was the Aussie banning of Mister Skinnylegs, anything to do with claims of left-wing feminism and anything about why the cute little pig seems to cause the most controversy in Australia.
An episode of Peppa Pig featuring Mister Skinnylegs was banned from Australian TV screens in February after a parent watching the show complained to the ABC that the “pro-spider propaganda” wasn’t appropriate for Aussie kids, given Australia is home to some of the most venomous spiders in the world.
The ABC agreed and banned the episode.
In 2013, Peppa was in the headlines again after political commentator Piers Akerman labelled the cartoon pig “a left-wing feminist”.
“Even the cartoon character Peppa Pig pushes a weird feminist line that would be closer to the hearts of Labor’s Handbag Hit Squad than the preschool audience it is aimed at,” Akerman wrote in a column about Australia’s public broadcaster ABC.
But what Peppa’s real opinions on feminism are we will never know — because it’s off limits.
Banning questions is nothing new to living celebrities.
For most stars questions about their love lives are a no-go-zone. And in the case of Tom Cruise — anything on Scientology is off limits too. Even then, however, real celebrities generally don’t pre-approve questions or converse only by email.
But Peppa clearly thinks that she is special. Maybe she’s keen to rival The Muppets’ Miss Piggy or singer Ariana Grande in the diva stakes.
In 2014, US pop star Ariana Grande faced allegations of diva behaviour during her trip to Australia. Grande came under fire from the media after rumours she cancelled a photo call and left a long list of demands, including that she only be photographed “from the left”.
Sorry Peppa, but we don’t have time for your demands.
The questions Peppa Pig refuses to answer: 1. Anything on the banning of MrSkinnylegs 2. Anything on the claims Peppa is a left-wing feminist 3. Anything on why Peppa has been controversial in Australia.
