Russell Gilbert To Return To Stage As Friends Rally

Russell Gilbert is ready to return to the stage following a tumultuous year.

The comedian’s partner of 19 years, Rochelle Nolan, was found dead after taking her own life in September last year.

Just two weeks later, Gilbert underwent surgery for a brain aneurysm, during which he suffered a stroke.

While the 56-year-old is still recovering from the stroke, he hasn’t lost his sense of humour.

Talking to Woman’s Day, he joked about returning to the stage for the Gala 4 Gilbo fundraiser in July.

“It’s an amazing thing to happen, and I do want to get back on stage,” he said.

“I’ve got jokes – I just have to remember them!”

The gala will be held at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre on 17 July and Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on 31 July.

Raising funds to help with the rehabilitation ongoing costs needed to get Gilbert back on his feet, it will see the likes of Dave Hughes, Wil Anderson, Judith Lucy, Denise Scott, Glenn Robbins, Lehmo and more take to the stage.

On a Go Fund Me page set up to help raise further funds, Gilbert said the support was incredible.

“It’s so great to know you have such amazing support from your friends,” he said.

“What a line-up of comics! The best in the country.”

Talking to the Herald Sun earlier this month, his sister Ellie said the stroke had a massive impact on his speech.

“It is a jigsaw puzzle. He has to rewire his brain to go from ‘A’ to ‘Z’ again,” she said.

“At the moment, it’s going from ‘A’ to ‘J’, and back to ‘B’.”
