The Moment A Man Jumped On Train Tracks To Save His Grandchild
An heroic grandfather has narrowly missed being hit by a train after jumping onto tracks to save his baby granddaughter.
The man jumped onto tracks at Wentworthville, in Sydney's west, when a pram with his 18-month-old granddaughter inside rolled off the platform on Sunday.
The 62-year-old handed the toddler back to family but was forced to walked along the tracks to get back onto the platform, narrowly missing an oncoming freight train, police say.
But his actions were praised by police.
“[It was] heroic. He’s run down the tracks to the end of the platform,” Acting Inspector Paul Reynolds told Nine News.
“Baby [was] very lucky, grandfather just as lucky.”
The little girl suffered cuts and bruises to her head but wasn't seriously injured.
The grandfather, who arrived from India three days ago, was on an outing with the child, his wife and the girl’s mother.
Police were told he let go of the stroller to speak to the girl's mother, and the slight slope on the platform led the pram onto the tracks.
No charges are expected to be laid.
