Tony Abbott Remains Prime Minister

Today was D Day for Tony Abbott as his position as Prime Minister has been in question for the past week, however the motion to Spill has been defeated and he has remained Prime Minister.

The polls in the lead up to today were not looking good for the PM with record low approval ratings and it was revealed that Malcolm Turnbull was the preferred Liberal leader 64 to 25.

All eyes were on Canberra this morning, with the anticipation there would be a new Prime Minister emerging however The Liberal Party members voted against the motion 61 - 39.

Chief government whip Philip Ruddock described the vote as "very clear" when he informed the waiting media of the result.

But the outcome is unlikely to end speculation about Mr Abbott's future amid continuing bad polling for the coalition and its leader.

A Newspoll, published ahead of the party room meeting, showed Labor leading the coalition 57-43 per cent.

It also showed only one in four voters were satisfied with Mr Abbott's performance.
