Get out the sunscreen and pedestal fans Canberra, because summer has finally arrived!

A low intensity heatwave is expected to hit the capital later this week, with temps rising into the mid-thirties by Wednesday.

Thursday’s expected to be the hottest day this week, with a top of 35 degrees.

“That’s about 8 degrees above the December average for our maximum,” Weatherzone meteorologist, Craig McIntosh, said.

“In addition to that, the minimum temperatures are also going to be jumping. So usually in December it averages out to around 11 degrees, but we’re looking at minimums of about 17 by Thursday and they’re going to stay warm through to the end of the week.”

We may get some showers later in the week, but it won’t be much.

It comes just days after Canberra copped a downpour, with some areas receiving 60 millimetres of rain over just a couple of days!
