Final preparations are underway at Thoroughbred Park for a big day of racing, with all eyes on the champion Canberra entrant.

It looks like a long shot for Single Gaze, who’s currently at $35, perhaps because she’s never run the 3200 metres.

Jockey Kathy O’Hara will ride Single Gaze in the big race that starts at 3pm - she’ll be just the 6th woman to ride in a Melbourne Cup!

There’ll be lots of celebrations at Thoroughbred Park to honour Single Gaze..

“Anyone dressed up in single gaze colours of royal blue and red will be able to go in a competition to win a $500 Canberra Centre voucher. There’ll be two of those,” Chief Executive of Canberra Racing, Peter Stubbs, said.

“There’s banners and flags all over the city. Certainly it’s coming through to us there’s a lot of interest in Single Gaze and there’ll be a lot of focus on her in the Cup.”

Around 5000 people are expected to head to Thoroughbred Park for what’ll be a big day of racing.

Gates open at 10:30am with the first race kicking off at 11:25am and the last race at 4:33pm, with lots of others in between!

There’s plenty happening off the track too, with Fashions on the Field one of the highlights.

“The patterns are in trend at the moment as well as solid colour,” Canberra Racing Club Sales & Marketing Manager, Briony Young, said.

“But definitely if you’ve got a fascinator and a hat and you’ve brought you’re A game, it’s a very fierce competition in Canberra.”

There’ll also be extra police around to make sure everyone stays safe.

“There’ll be police out and about both in the entertainment precincts and on our roads to keep people safe so use public transport, plan ahead, don’t drink or take drugs before you’re driving, and have a good time at the races,” Officer in Charge in Gungahlin, Rod Anderson, said.

Free ACTION buses will be available to get people home safely.
