Ever thought about joining a running group, but decided your couch was just too appealing?
Have you also found it tough to make friends in Canberra? Let’s face it, as much as we love our city, it can be quite clicky!
Well, there’s a club right here in Canberra that’ll help you get moving AND meet new people.
The Canberra Beer Runners Club.
Fiona Harris set up the club after taking a long hard look at her life and not really liking it.
“I had a bit of a tough year in 2016. I was working in the APS in a job I didn’t like. I had bought a gym membership but I wasn’t going to the gym. I weighed 10 kilos more than I do now,” she said.
“To top it off, my beautiful mother in law lost her battle with cancer in January this year. One day I looked at myself honestly in the mirror and thought: this is not who I want to be.”
So Fiona started to exercise and learn about the health benefits.
“When you run, Endorphins and Dopamine are released by your brain into your body. These are basically free happy drugs. Also, your heart is pumping, your whole body is moving. It’s a natural high,” she said.
Around the same time, Fiona was chatting to some of her friends who like a laugh and beer.
They told her how hard it is to meet new people in Canberra.
Fiona had read about beer running overseas, and soon after that, the Canberra Beer Runners Club was born!

The club combines running with the responsible consumption of alcohol in a friendly and inclusive environment.
“We are a social fitness club that is non-competitive, non-judgmental, and anyone can join from experienced runners to people who are just starting their fitness journey,” Fiona said.
Best of all, it’s FREE!
They meet several times a month in different areas around Canberra, where participants take part in a fun group warm up, then run 1.5 to 3 km’s at an easy pace to a local pub or brewery for a couple of bevvies!
To say Fiona’s been inspired by the people who turn up, would be an understatement.
“They are the most interesting, genuine people that you could ever hope to meet. It feels awesome to run with such a positive and supportive group of people,” she said.
“Our team is made up of Craft Beer enthusiasts, marathon runners, fit people, people just starting on their fitness journey, runners who are healing from physical injuries, walkers and even non-drinkers. We are an inclusive group. Everyone is welcome!”
So if you want to meet new people, have a chat, drink a few beers and get fit along the way, make sure you sign up!
