Teachers have a tough job. One of the toughest, I’d say.
The ACT Education Minister has responded to new figures that show Canberra’s public school teachers received almost $6 million in compensation over the past five years.
Nearly 700 school staff who were assaulted last year alone, received compensation for physical injuries and diseases, as well as psychology injury.
“Sadly, it could be the case that the figures that are being recorded today are less than what is actually happening in our schools,” Education Minister Yvette Berry told Kristen and Wilko this morning.
“This is unacceptable, we do need to do more to support our teachers as they are some of the most important people in our children’s lives.”
The Education Directorate is bringing on three specialist staff to tackle the issue of occupational violence in our schools.
“As far as I am aware, we’re the only jurisdiction in the country taking this as seriously as we are and placing a priority on it because we have to,” Minister Berry said.
