CONNIE JOHNSON’S STILL FIGHTING
Well, it’s official. Canberra’s hero Connie Johnson sucks at retiring!
Connie may be in a hospice as she succumbs to the perils of cancer, but in true Connie fashion, she’s still brainstorming ways to help “kick cancer to the curb!”
The Big Heart Project, which saw the Lyneham netball courts covered in donated five-cent coins, raising more than $2.2 million for Love Your Sister, was meant to be Connie’s last hurrah..
“We’ve experienced this success, then what’s next? The world’s our oyster,” she told MIX 106.3 Breakfast co-host, Kristen Henry.
“We have a 500,000 strong online village of people who want to see the end of cancer. And that day we proved we all have that common goal. So the fight must go on.”
A few small patches of healthy tissue (and of course that fighting spirit) is what’s keeping Connie alive.
At any point, those pieces of liver could be taken over by the cancer, which would lead to liver failure, giving her just days left.
But Connie told Kristen, there’s just too much to do.
And she’s not at peace with dying.
“I want to take the kids to a circus, we’ve never been to a circus. I want to take them to a hedge maze. There’s those things I want to do with my family and then there’s the things I want to do professionally. I’ve got a year or two’s worth of work in my head.”
When the time comes, Connie hopes to die peacefully at home, surrounded by her family.
And she’s in the process of planning a fabulous funeral.
“It’s just not going to be like any other funeral you’ve ever been to. Yeah it’ll be more of a party!”
When Kristen asked Connie what message she’d like to leave when she goes, her answer was simple and powerful..
“Thank you for the love. Thank you for the support. Thank you for the friendship. Live each day. Notice the nice moments and now is awesome.”

In other amazing news, Connie and her Gold Logie winning brother Samuel have been named joint winners of this year’s Golden Wattle Award.
The award goes to those who express the Aussie spirit – honouring the Johnson’s for their efforts in raising millions for cancer research through Love Your Sister.
