Labor MLA’s have welcomed the fresh push from Independent Senator David Leyonhjelm to allow the ACT to create its own euthanasia laws.
The controversial Andrew’s Bill bans the ACT and the Northern Territory from legislating on the issue.
Senator Leyonhjelm is confident the block can be overturned with a free vote.
It’s something a group of ACT Labor MP’s have been lobbying for, for some time.
“For a Federal Parliament, made up largely of members who don’t represent us, to have made legislation 20 years ago, and for that legislation in 2017 to still exist I think is an abomination,” Member for Ginninderra Tara Cheyne said.
“We launched a petition at the end of July seeking these Federal laws be overturned and that has several hundred signatures.”
Ms Cheyne said the first step is to get the outdated legislation overturned, then proper conversations with the community can start.
“The government’s view is the ACT should be able to determine policy in this area and so, were that to occur, there’d be a lot of community conversations that would have to happen,” she said.
