The ACT Chief Minister is hopeful we will see more test cricket matches in Canberra in the future.

It's after Cricket Australia announced yesterday, Manuka Oval will host a test match between Australia and Sri Lanka in the summer of 2018-19.

"My expectation is given all the work that's gone in to get the test match, it won't be a one off, the venue will host test matches again in the future, and will continue to host cricket every year," Andrew Barr said.

The ACT Tourism Industry Advisory Council has also welcomed the announcement.

"It's a wonderful opportunity. We'll have people from the region and from the city itself flowing into the city, so good news for tourism all around," Chairman David Marshall said.

"It proves we can host events of international status, I think it's just an incredibly important initiative and success for the city."
