A Queanbeyan High School teacher is preparing for the challenge of a lifetime – something most of us would never even consider.
The event involves three gruelling legs – a 140km run, a 33km+ swim and a 292km cycle.
To date, only 33 solo athletes have completed the triathlon, 8 of which have been women.
But Laura’s hoping to become the first ever solo Australian woman to achieve this amazing feat!
While she’s no stranger to physical challenges, this one will be next level.
The preparation has been intense – to say the least.
“I’ve been lucky enough to get a coach that’s helped plan my training. The distances have increased. I’ve focused a lot on the swimming as I think that’s my weakest link. So pretty much, twice a day doing something,” she said.
“Your mindset is a big part of it. Just having lots of positive thoughts and things to think about. But the biggest thing for me that works is chunking it. So breaking it down into 20k runs and doing 7 of those.”
Many would shake their heads and wonder – why in the world is Laura putting herself through that?
As it turns out, this event and others Laura’s competed in, mean much more than simply crossing the finish line.
“Depression has been a big part of my life and I found exercise a real medicine to deal with it,” she said.
50% of donations raised on a GoFundMe page will go towards Beyond Blue, while the rest will help fund Laura’s participation in the event.
So far, over $3000 has been raised, with a $15,000 target.
“I’ve been really surprised how people have been so generous. It definitely gives me motivation to do the best I can do,” Laura said.
