RENTAL MARKET TOUGH FOR LOW INCOME EARNERS & SINGLE PARENTS
by Kate Rice
Low income earners, young people, and single parents are being hit hard by Canberra's housing affordability crisis, new research shows.
The Anglicare annual Rental Affordability Snapshot surveyed 1329 local properties advertised for rent on Friday, April 1, finding none were affordable for single parents, or single people on the Newstart or Youth allowance.
Anglicare Australia Executive Director Kasey Chambers says more needs to be done to boost the supply of affordable housing, suggesting benefit payments need to be looked at too.
"We have to look at adequate income. When you can't afford housing even when you're on the minimum wage, clearly we have to do something about the low level of Government benefits and minimum wage," she said.
