Roll up, roll up! It’s show time!

The Charny Carny is back, bigger and better than ever this weekend!

There’ll be all the usual crowd favourites, like carnival rides, market stalls, sideshow alley, a bubble table for the littlies, a petting zoo, reptiles, delicious food and more!

President of the West Belconnen Charny Carny Association, Michelle Fayes, reckons it’s the community feel that keeps bringing people back.

“It’s a community carnival run by the community. We’re a group of people that just love West Belconnen and we want to bring out some fun for the people of West Belconnen,” she said.

“And it’s a great opportunity for local community groups to raise funds for themselves and awareness.”

The Charny Carny started many years ago, sparked by a conversation between parents waiting for preschool to finish, back in 2003.

Their idea was to have a fun and affordable community event where local groups worked together, sharing the organising and various tasks.

And how it’s taken off since then!

So, what happens with the money that’s raised from the carnival?

“After the Charny Carny is done, we look at our finances, and if we have enough leftover after our bills are all paid, we donate that to the charities on the oval as well,” Michelle said.

As the event grows each year, they’re also calling or more volunteers to come on board.

“We really need people from the community to come and be on the committee. We’re a very small group and if we had a few more hands, it’d make life a lot easier, so anyone who’d like to volunteer, we’d love to hear from you,” Michelle said.

If you’d like to help out, shoot the organisers an email online.

All the action kicks off at 46 Lhotsky Street in Charnwood on Saturday from 11am-4pm – the oval next to the school!
