WODEN'S ABODE HOTEL AUSTRALIA'S FIRST GREEN STAR HOTEL

The Abode Hotel in Woden has been given a 4 star Green Star rating for its sustainability.
It's the first hotel in Australia to be awarded a Green Star rating, which looks at the design, construction, and operation of buildings, fitouts and communities.
The site of the hotel used to be Juliana House, home to government departments and organisations, which was bought out by GEOCON and turned into a contemporary hotel.
GEOCON Managing Director Nick Georgalis said they decided to re-use the building rather than knock it down and re-build it, which meant they were on the sustainable path from the beginning.
"We retained the structure, the facade and the glazing, and reduced our demolition waste to landfill by 80% by doing that. We reduced enormous amounts of carbon dioxide into the environment by recycling and re-using this building structure and creating a hotel," he said.
"It tells the world and Australia that we are innovative in the ACT, and when we do have international visitors that do sincerely care about the environment and are looking for best practise sustainable outcomes, our hotel should certainly be on their radar."
