Bakery Shuts Down After Controversial Refusal

An American bakery that refused to make a wedding cake for a lesbian couple has shut its doors. CNS News revealed owners Aaron and Melissa Klein became financially crippled following thier legal battle with the same-sex couple.

The Kleins took to Facebook to alert their customers of the closure, telling them they ‘appreciated everyone’s continued prayer and support.’

The couple caused controversy when they refused to make a wedding cake for a customer after discovering it was for lesbian couple Rachel and Laurel Bowman-Cryers. At the time the Klein’s said their religious views were the motivating factor for declining the couple’s business.

After being refused the same-sex couple filed a complaint with the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries and in 2015 the Kleins were ordered to pay $135,000 in damages. They refused to pay and it’s understood they are now taking the case all the way to the US supreme court and appealing the decision.

A Crowd Funding page was set up for the Kleins to help pay their legal fees and has raised over $500,000. The couple’s cake store Sweet Treats originally closed in 2013, but the couple continued to sell cakes from their home. Now it will cease all together.
