Holiday in Tulum, Mexico

It hurts me to share this travel secret with the world, but it’s too good to keep to myself. Write this down. It’s called Tulum, in Mexico. And it’s a little-known eco-chic town just an hour and a half’s drive south of Cancun on the west coast of Mexico.

New York’s hipsters flock here to top up their tans and turn off their mobile phones, with most of the small bourique hotels describing themselves as ‘flip flop luxury’. White sandy beaches that stretch for miles, the best of Mexico’s spicy cuisine, cocktails that require lemon and salt, and the best way to get from A to B is by bicycle. This is one holiday spot that will make you feel like you’ve landed in heaven.

In the heart of the Mayan Riviera, be sure to make time to visit the ruins, either found perched above the aqua ocean or hidden in jungles alongside limestone swimming holes called Cenotes where the water glows bright blue. You can snorkel or dive in them or perhaps just take some of the most amazing photos you’ll ever snap.

The nearby shopping district of Cancun will not disappoint, nor will the nightlife on offer in the many busy bars and late night restaurants.

But it’s the unassuming level of cool here that will leave a lasting impression. In true Mexican style, nothing is cause for concern and you’ll be made to feel welcome at any of the beachside Spanish speaking beach clubs.

My top tip, make sure you head here with enough time up your sleeve to stay and explore. Even the inland towns like Coba and Valladolid are worth staying a few nights to enjoy. But sssh, don’t tell anyone!
