Children Among Seven Bodies Found At WA Property

Four children and two grandparents are among seven people found dead in a murder-suicide at a rural property south of Perth.

It's understood three generations of the same farming family were involved in the tragedy at Osmington, northeast of Margaret River.

West Australian Police Commissioner Chris Dawson said the bodies of two adults were found outside near a building, while five were discovered inside. He said they appeared to be residents.

Two firearms were found at the scene, and victims suffered gunshot wounds.

"It appears that gunshot wounds are there but I don't want to go further than that," Mr Dawson said.

A local resident who did not want to be named said he understood the property belonged to the grandparents.

"They are a hugely respected family and a great asset to the community," he said.

"It's just absolutely really shocking.

"I can't imagine just how disturbed someone is how they could do that."

Police were called to the property at about 5.15am on Friday.

"Police are currently responding to what I can only describe as a horrific incident," Mr Dawson told reporters in Perth.

"This is a significant tragedy."

He would not confirm if it was a murder-suicide.

"It's not appropriate for me to speculate on any further matters," he said.

"I can only say at this point in time we have no information to raise concern about wider public safety issues."

"We are trying to locate other members of the family and friends.

"I'm not in a position to release any further details of the identity of the deceased."

Perth homicide detectives are helping local police in the investigation and are expected to remain at the property for several days.

A police chaplain is there to support officers.

"Regrettably, these tragedies do take their toll," Mr Dawson said.

Reverend Sarah MacPherson of the Anglican Augusta-Margaret River parish says St John the Evangelist church on Osmington Road is open for anyone who would like to come for prayer.

Alex, a local businessman, told AAP the tragedy was "pretty rough".

Mr Dawson said the small Osmington community would be reeling but was confident it would rally together.

"This devastating tragedy will no doubt have a lasting impact on the families concerned, the whole community, and in particular, the local communities in our South West," he said.

"Naturally, we will be asking for anyone who does know anything about this matter to contact police."

Osmington consists only of a handful of roads, farms, vineyards, holiday chalets and horse studs.

Near the tourism hotspot of Margaret River, it also has luxury accommodation and boutique dining.

Premier Mark McGowan said the incident was shocking.

"My thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims, and also with the first-responders and investigators as they piece together this tragic set of circumstances," he said.

Local MP Libby Mettam said her heart went out to everyone affected by the tragedy.
