Chaotic Scenes At Sydney Airport

It’s one of the busiest days of the year for travellers, and chaos has unfortunately erupted at Sydney Airport.

Long queues at the Virgin Australia domestic terminal are testing the patience of passengers and staff, with both being urged to arrive earlier to avoid delays caused by the huge passenger congestion.

Passengers were in for quite a shock when they arrived at the terminal on Tuesday morning to find the Virgin Australia queue was extending out of the terminal, with the carrier calling out for flights with urgent check-ins.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the call out for immediate check-in only added to the chaos.

"It was crazy," Fairfax journalist Josh Dye, who was heading to Perth, said. "I've never seen it that bad."

It seemed that the passenger crush was only affecting Virgin Australia flights, with other carriers progressing as normal.

Despite the huge delays and chaotic scenes, a Virgin Australia spokesman said there was ‘no disrupt’ or system failure at fault.

"Today is one of the busiest days of the year for travellers returning from holidays which has resulted in delays at our check-in counters at Sydney Airport this morning," the spokesman said.

"Each of our check-in counters are fully staffed and we are working hard to have guests on their way as quickly as possible," he said.

"During peak travel periods we encourage guests to check-in online, arrive at the airport early, and listen out for announcements made in the terminal."
