Children Among 26 Confirmed Dead In Texas Church Shooting

The gunman responsible for killing at least 26 people, including children, after walking into a church and opening fire in Texas has been identified as 26-year-old Devin Patrick Kelley.

It happened at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, a small town of about 400 people about 50 kilometres south of San Antonio, during Sunday morning service.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said during a press conference that 26 people had been killed.

Wilson County Commissioner Albert Gamez, jnr, said the gunman was chased into the next county and was killed, but it wasn’t clear whether if it was self-inflicted or if police shot him.

Texas Democratic congressman Henry Cuellar said the man, “went there, he walked in, started shooting people and then took off.”

David Keen, a constable in Wilson County, confirmed there were casualties and said, "there were kids involved".

Joseph Silva, 49, who lives about seven kilometres north-east of Sutherland Springs, described the place as "a one-blinking-light town".

"There is a gas station and a post office," he said.

"That's about all there really is."

The official says investigators are looking at social media posts Kelley may have made in the days before the attack, including one that appeared to show an AR-15 semiautomatic weapon.

The US official says Kelly lived in a suburb of San Antonio and he doesn't appear to be linked to organised terrorist groups.
