Jimi Hendrix: Electric Church Documentary Release dates

After premiering on Showtime in early September, Jimi Hendrix: Electric Church, the documentary that captures The Jimi Hendrix Experience on July 4, 1970, at the second Atlanta International Pop Festival, will be released on DVD and Blu-ray October 30.

The home video will feature an expanded edition of the film, and will include live renditions of "Red House" and "Freedom" not seen in the televised version.

Directed by John McDermott, Jimi Hendrix: Electric Church focuses on Atlanta promoter Alex Cooley's efforts to organize the festival, as well as Hendrix and his band's role as the event's headliner.

The festival took place just 10 weeks before the guitar legend's death, and was Hendrix's largest headlining performance ever in the U.S., with an audience estimated at over 300,000.

Hendrix's set included such classic songs as: "Purple Haze," "Foxy Lady," "Hey Joe," "Fire," "All Along the Watchtower" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," as well as his version of "The Star-Spangled Banner," which was performed against a backdrop of fireworks.

The documentary also includes never-before-seen footage, plus interviews with Paul McCartney, Steve Winwood, The Black Crowes' Rich Robinson, Metallica's Kirk Hammett, and ex-Allman Brothers Band guitarist Derek Trucks, as well as Jimi Hendrix Experience bassist Billy Cox and late Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell.

The DVD and Blu-ray version of the documentary also features bonus music video for "Room Full of Mirrors" that combines film footage and previously unseen photos of the performance.

A companion soundtrack to the documentary titled Freedom: Atlanta Pop Festival was released in late August and became Hendrix's 46th album to chart on the Billboard 200.
