In a world starved of pretty much all live sport, this could be the saving grace for sports fans (if you can stomach pro wrestling, that is).
The world’s most famous wrestling organisation WWE has been granted status as an “essential business” by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
Florida, like many other US states, is currently on a wide-reaching “stay at home” order.
The exemption means that despite having one wrestler test positive to COVID-19, WWE will resume matches without audiences and only essential personnel in attendance.
It remains to be seen whether wrestlers will need to adhere to the standard 1.5m social-distancing protocols.
A spokesperson for the Florida Governor told ESPN that events like WWE’s are essential because they “are critical to Florida’s economy.”
Other essential services given exemptions to the state’s “stay at home” orders include healthcare, food, energy and transportation sectors, so you can understand how the jump in logic to professional wrestling has been made.
That being said, we are all pretty starved for sport right now, maybe we’re going to become avid WWE fans?
