Street car enthusiasts will once again roll on in to the Nation’s Capital as the annual Summernats car show gears up to make its roaring return to Exhibition Park in 2022.

A sign of life returning to ‘normal’, the now summertime tradition in the Capital looks set to be the first major event to be held in Canberra following the outbreak of COVID-19 last month.

Last year’s event was cancelled due to EPIC still being used as a COVID-19 testing site.

A scaled down event was planned for March of this year but that was also cancelled due to the pandemic.

Organisers, however, are confident that the upcoming Summernats festival will be able to go ahead, following the reveal of the Territory’s ‘pathway froward’ and as Canberra’s vacanation race continues to accelerate.

The event had previously developed a COVID-safe plan for ACT Health, which it says can be tweaked to match the public health directions that will be in place at the time.

Co-Owner, Andy Lopez is hoping the announcement of plans to stage the event in 2022 will come as welcome news to many, as the Territory looks to transition back to COVID-normality over the coming months.

“The Chief and the ACT Government have always been great supporters of our event, and I’m sure the tourism and hospitality sector are keen to see us here in January.”

“The right conditions are coming, and the work needs to ramp up now so we’re ready to go in January.”

It’s estimated, the event has injected $750 million into the ACT economy over the past 30 years.

It’s expected next year’s event could bring in another $30 million alone.

All going to plan, the 4 day Summernats festival will return to EPIC on Thursday 6 January, 2022.
