Looking to get out of the city for a weekend? Or maybe you just need a break from home, where we’ve all been spending a lot more time lately thanks to a little thing called Covid.
There’s a town called Goulburn an hour’s drive away that’s got plenty to offer.
I can already hear what you’re thinking, it’s the place with the big sheep off the highway. It’s known for the Big Merino, but there’s so much more to my hometown than that, and I’ve compiled a list of all the things you can do in Goulburn, and yes, one of them is visiting the Big Sheep.
- Visit Belmore Park
It’s beautifully maintained with plenty of flowers, statues, a rotunda, and a playground for the kids to run around after a few hours in the car. Opposite the historic Courthouse, and close to plenty of café’s, it’s the perfect place to stop.
- Check out the Rocky Hill War Memorial and Museum
Head up the hill for a spectacular view of Goulburn and plenty of history.
- See the Historic Cathedrals
I’m no history or architect buff, but even I can appreciate Goulburn’s stunning Cathedrals. Check out St Saviour’s Cathedral, and St Peter and Paul’s both within walking distance of the main street.
- Relax and see the latest flicks at Lilac City Cinema
This Goulburn gem is one of my favourite places in town. It’s a family run business that has all the best movies to see, an amazing snack bar and tickets are ONLY 9 dollars. I repeat 9 dollars.
- Stroll down the main street and grab something unique at a boutique store.
Goulburn’s got so many gorgeous stores along the main street selling locally and Aussie made products. Something Special, Vintage House, Country Outfitters and Your Home Matters to name a few.
- Get your motor running at Wakefield Park Raceway
A perfect stop in for all the rev heads. Head to a track day to catch some action.
- Get lost in the piles of books and vinyl records at the Argyle Emporium.
A hidden gem within walking distance of Auburn Street is the Argyle Emporium. It’s rumoured to stock over half a million second hand books, along with hundreds of vinyl records and collectables. The perfect spot for all my fellow book worms.

- See the Big Merino
Conveniently located on the edge of town by a few petrol stations and fast food stores, you can’t come to Goulburn without taking a selfie in front of the sheep.
