Canberra has shivered through its coldest start to the official Winter season ever on record.

On Tuesday, the mercury dipped to -5.7 out at the Canberra Airport.

That’s the coldest ever recorded minimum temperature for the first day of Winter, anywhere across the Nation’s Capital, since records began back in 1921.

Despite the record-breaking chilly morning, Tuesday was slightly less cooler than the previous day.

Monday saw the Territory record its coldest May morning in a decade, dropping back to -6.3.

Temperatures on Wednesday morning were far more mild, only dipping to a positive 3 degrees.
