Dog owners across the Territory will be required to update their furry friend’s details annually from the middle of the year.

Laws to establish a new digital dog database along with the requirement of yearly registrations was officially passed in the ACT on Thursday.

City Services Minster, Chris Steel said the new rules will help get lost dogs home to their families sooner.

“The new system will address challenges with the current lifetime registration system, where 95 per cent of roaming dogs that are retrieved have out of date registration information such as an incorrect phone number or address.

The free annual re-registrations will begin from July 1, with owners to receive an annual registration reminder notice in the form of an email, text or letter from Domestic Animal Services.

A dog’s annual registration renewal date will be based on the date they were first registered in the ACT.
