A 38-year-old Canberra man has died after being hit by a car in Queanbeyan on Wednesday night.

Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Hill Lane and the Kings Highway at about 8pm to reports of a pedestrian being stuck by a vehicle.

Police were told that the man was walking in the middle of the road in the dark, before being struck from behind by a passing Volkswagen Amarok.

Despite the efforts of police and paramedics, the 38-year-old died at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle, a 25-year-old Bungendore man, was not physically injured and was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

A crime scene has been established and an investigation into the incident launched.

Police are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area to come forward by contacting Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
