It’s been a long road, overcoming the obstacles of a pandemic but finally the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games are here…in 2021.
It all officially gets underway on Friday night with the commencement of the Opening Ceremony.
The Australian team will be lead by basketball legend and Canberra boy Patrick ‘Patty’ Mills alongside swimmer Cate Campbell.
The captain of the Aussie Men’s side will also make history on Friday night as the first Indigenous Australia to carry to flag.
Mills said it was a privilege to be chosen.
“As a proud Kokatha, Naghiralgal and Dauareb-Meriam man it’s incredible, a very passionate moment I can feel in my bones.”
The University of Canberra’s Director of Sport and former Olympic Coach, Carrie Graf said it’s also going to be a very proud moment for everyone watching on from home.
“He’s worked in the social justice space, he’s absolutely talented as a basketballer and he’s a proud Canberran so I think everyone will be super proud to be watching him.”
Patty leads a long list of locals taking part in this year’s games.
