The ACT Greens will introduce a bill into the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, seeking to extend the right to vote to 16 and 17 year old’s within the Territory.

The bill isn’t expected to be debated about until next year after going through a public inquiry process.

Greens MLA, Johnathan Davis said the change would help empower younger Canberrans.

“Empowering these Canberrans, many of whom are more engaged in politics than their parents or grandparents, will result in better, longer-term policies, and deeper engagement with young people on decisions that could affect the rest of their lives.”

The change to voting rights is a Greens Party policy that’s also being perused in Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and at a federal level.
