With plenty of Easter celebrations taking place across the capital we’re being encouraged to make sure we look after ourselves and our pets this egg-stra long weekend.

As we enjoy a few too many sweet treats, local animal welfare group, RSPCA ACT is reminding locals to keep their furry friends away from bad foods.

It’s not just the choccy’s that we need to keep out of their bowls, your pet should avoid:

  • Hot Cross Buns (not just chocolate)
  • Coffee
  • Nuts
  • Onion
  • Avocado

CEO of the ACT branch Michelle Robertson said, even though our pets shouldn’t over-indulge, there are some purr-fect alternatives that they can enjoy.

‘’Anything that you buy from a reputable pet store or rescue group or organisation that is labelled as pet friendly and safe are good alternatives’’.

Food isn’t the only thing to look out for this holiday, with cute costumes also posing a potential risk.

‘’It’s very cute to want to dress up our cats and dogs, so if you have Easter-wear make sure that it’s not too tight, that it’s comfortable and that it’s not too restricting.’’ Ms Robertson said.

However, we’re also being reminded that the greatest gift we can give our pets is our time.

Taking a moment to play with your pet, out on a walk and throwing a ball providing a far better alternative than anything else we could give them.
