The oldest giraffe at the National Zoo and Aquarium, Hummer, has died at the age of 20.

Also known by his full name, Humbekhali, he’s spent the past 18 years in Canberra after arriving on the back of a ‘Hummer’ from the Monarto Zoo in South Australia back in 2004.

In an email to its members, Zoo staff said Hummer was in good health and had no suffering as he approached his life expectancy.

“We take heart in the fact that he lived a long, happy life whilst receiving the best possible care and love from all of our dedicated staff, members and visitors.”

He leaves behind his girlfriend Skye, with arrangements now being made to get her some company as soon as possible.
