A New Year’s fireworks display will go ahead in Canberra this year for the first time since 2018.

The display will be moved from its former home at Civic Square to the skies above Lake Burley Griffin.

ACT Assistant Minister for Economic Development, Tara Cheyne said the change in location will give spectators better views of the display while giving Canberrans greater opportunity to social distance.

“The fireworks will be launched from multiple pontoons across central, east and west basins for the first time to ensure everyone will have a great view while being able to spread out and enjoy the evening in a COVID safe manner.”

The New Year’s Eve event will also feature roving musicians and performers.

It’ll be the first time a fireworks display has been held on New Year’s Eve in Canberra since 2018 after bushfire smoke forced the late cancelation of planned celebrations in 2019 and last year’s event put on hold due to the pandemic.
