New DNA evidence has named Able Seaman (AB) Thomas Welsby Clark as the previously unidentified sailor on board the HMAS Sydney II.

Clark was the only body recovered from the warship that sunk off the WA coast back in 1941, following an intense battle with the disguised German merchant raider HSK Kormoran.

Despite surviving the battle and the sinking, AB Clark tragically died at sea in the life raft.

His remains were found near Rocky Point on Christmas Island nearly three months later.

Clark grew up on a property in New Farm, Brisbane before joining the Royal Australian Naval Reserve in 1940.
