Canberrans are being encouraged to don the same colour as the iconic uniforms worn by some of the communities hardest working volunteers on Wednesday, to show their appreciation and thanks for members of the SES.

The annual ‘Wear Orange Wednesday’ is celebrated each year during National Volunteer Week.

ACT SES Chief Officer, Anthony Draheim, said local volunteers have been kept busy in recent years.

“We’ve gone into storms and flood incidents, responding to that record breaking hailstorm last year and assisting ACT Police with the search and rescue responsibilities.”

More than 390 Canberrans have taken up the call to arms of the SES, currently trained and able to assist in an emergency.

“They’re there for the community, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and they never ask for anything in return.”

A number of local landmarks, including Questacon, the Canberra Times fountain, Malcom Fraser Bridge and the Light Rail stops will be lit up Orange to mark the occasion and say thanks.
