Sending kids to day care in Canberra continues to cost more than elsewhere in the country.

The latest report from the Productivity Commission has found Canberra families are spending about $610 a week for 50 hours of centre based day.

That drops slightly for family day care, with the median rate there sitting at $582 a week in the ACT.

However both remain the highest rates for any state or territory in the country.

Across the border, the cost for the same number of hours of centre based day care in New South Wales currently sits at $550 a week.

The median cost for 50 hours of centre based day care across Australia sits at $540 a week, dropping to $530 a week for family day care.
