We love some warmer weather. When it gets too hot we go on the search to find somewhere to cool off. One of the best ways to do this is enjoying the nature in and around Canberra while taking a nice swim. We have put together a list of our favourite spots to swim that aren’t pools. Each spot offers something a little different and is worth a visit.

Pine Island

Located in the south of Canberra, Pine Island is well known to the locals of Tuggeranong. You’ll find this swimming area to be busy during the hottest days in Canberra as it is very easy to access. In the south, Pine Island has the largest recreation area along the Murrumbigdee river as there are plenty of picnic tables and BBQs to use.

There is also a large playground, which makes it the most family friendly area too. If you own a dog, keep in mind that this area does not allow them.

If you want to head to Pine Island, use these directions.

Kambah Pool

Staying southside, Kambah Pool is one of the largest area’s you can swim in the ACT. To get there, you need to drive along Kambah Pool road. We love this area as you can hike and visit other areas such as Casuarina Sands and even Pine Island (though it is a bit of a trek).

Kambah Pool is a great spot as it is well shaded and had plenty of room for swimming, although it can be hard to park on really hot days. If you aren’t a local, just be aware that some parts of the area offer clothing optional places to swim. If that is what you are into, go for it.

No dogs are allowed in the area so best to leave them at home.

If you want to head to Kambah Pool, follow these directions.

Uriarra Crossing

Probably the most well known spot to swim in Canberra. Uriarra Crossing is located along the Murrumbidgee River, which close to Weston Creek and other suburbs in Molonglo Valley. The water in the area is probably one of the coolest as it comes directly from the Snowy Mountains. The best thing about Uriarra Crossing is the shady shores that you can relax and picnic after your swim. It is a large area so you should be able to find a spot to set your stuff down.

If you didn’t want to swim, there are plenty of BBQs and grassy areas to play games and keep the kids entertained. This area is also one of the few spots you can bring your dog but check out more of the quieter areas that are signed as they are normally the best to let your dog off its leash.

Want to head to Uriarra Crossing? Follow the directions.

Jerrabomberra Waterhole

If you are in Queanbeyan or Jerrabomberra, the best place for you to head is to the Jerrabomberra Waterhole. For those outside of the Jerrabomberra area, this spot isn’t very well known, which is why it is great to visit. The water is deeper than expected and it is very easy to get in and out of the area. Just keep in mind that the waterhole is close to houses.

Get directions to the Jerrabomberra Waterhole.

Gibraltar Creek

This has to be one of the most picturesque places to cool off. You’ll find this gem just of Corin road. A little smaller and more difficult to get to than others on this list, it is still worth travelling too. You’ll find very cool water and don’t forget your camera as you will want some pictures.

No dogs are allowed at Gibraltar Creek so kept that in mind when travelling.

If you are interested, we have found directions on how to get there.
